Our main concern was to highlight the concept of centrality. We studied the literal and metaphorical meaning of a center and the various ways in which it could take form in architecture.

Our aim was to design various, literal or symbolic central, introverted spaces that although they differ from each other in the use, operation, shape or atmosphere, they will coexist. Therefore the core of the whole building, as well as the cores of the individual spaces are public, central node points that promote the human interaction and communication. The space around them forms continuous and circular promenades, offering interesting visual and spatial experiences.

The garden takes dominating role in the center of the plot, while the building is formed around it. The four main public spaces, such as the main entrance, the library, the restaurant and the auditorium are autonomous and independent and extend vertically in all three levels of the building. Their cyclically, introverted volumes are located in hot spots in order to connect the Department of architecture with the rest departments of the University of Patras.

The rest building is formed around these volumes, and include design rooms at the first floor and laboratories at the second. There are 4 communal, “central” points that operate differently in section, as small lecture auditorium at the first floor and as an outdoor space at the second floor.

The student dormitories and the offices, which are addressed to fewer people, are located at the pilotis of the building and are designed in a smaller scale and with a more orthonormal approach than the entire curved building.
